Hi, I'm Shani (pronounced sha-nee)
At Wild Witch House (WWH) I strive to combine my skills in education, facilitation and community building (from a previous career in early childhood education) with my love and knowledge of herbal medicine (over 10 years as a folk herbalist and always and forever learning). My intention is to create space for people to reconnect with ancestral ways of knowing and using plant medicine in our everyday lives, while also growing a community that is committed to learning from one another and taking care of each other and the planet. I am passionate about providing access to information and opportunities that build relationships and comfort with our plant relatives and contribute to the healing of our minds, bodies and spirits.
Giving thanks and acknowledging the land
I am incredibly grateful to be living and working in Tkoronto and want to acknowledge and honour the Indigenous peoples, past, present and future of this land. Tkoronto is covered by Treaty 13 with the Mississaugas of the Credit and is the traditional territory of many nations including the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee and the Wendat peoples and is now home to many diverse First Nations, Inuit and Métis. I am committed to forever learning about the truth of colonization and genocide on this land and and how I can contribute to reconciliation in whatever way is needed and necessary. WWH is rooted in an anti-oppressive worldview and is grounded in the belief that no one is free until we are all free (including the plants!).
As a diasporic Jewish person (my ancestors are from Libya, Russia and Poland), a witch, and a settler in Tkoronto, I am still trying to navigate how to grow a business that is in right relationship with the land, the plants and the Indigenous people of this place. The identity of witch for me is one that acknowledges the intersection of animist ways of life, spiritual devotion to the natural world, belief and knowledge of the healing powers of plants and other natural elements, critical analysis of larger systems of power, and commitment to caring for community no matter what.
